Exploring new routes to synthetise and transform carbon

Innovation may also come from developing new methods for the synthesis and transformation of carbon nanophases such as SWCNT, DWCNT, MWCNT (respectively, single-wall carbon nanotube ; double - ; multi-.), nanohorns, few-layer graphite or nanostructured carbons. One recent example of it is the study of an in-situ room-temperature, laser-driven, peapod-to-DWCNT transformation, whose principle is to selectively excite the encapsulated fullerenes by the right laser wavelength (UV at 336 nm) in order to promote C60 coalescence without affecting the containing SWCNT.
