ß metastable alloys (Ti 555-3, Ti17 and Ti 10-2-3)

In the project PROMITI funded by the "Fondation pour la Recherche pour l’Aéronautique et l’Espace", mechanical behaviors of ß metastable titanium alloys Ti 17 and Ti 10-2-3 are compared to the new Ti 555-3 alloy. As these materials are two-phase alloys, a multi-scale study of the deformation micro-mechanisms is undertaken on model materials in order to analyze the respective influence of the phases’ morphologies and volume fractions. The results are compared with industrial alloys.

From fine microstructural observations, we expect to derive a predictive model for the microstructures of the Ti 555-3 alloy and a modeled deformation law. These models will have to be included in any finite elements calculation code.

Our work is based on the analysis of the microstructure obtained from different TEM techniques. One of our objectives is to define the controlling mechanisms for the deformation of these alloys by performing in-situ TEM deformation tests.
