Molecular machines : Mono molecular electronics

Why not integrating the full calculator circuit inside a single super-molecule?

This will be the ultimate integration for an electrical circuit on a material support, reducing drastically the fabrication and assembling costs and forcing us to use the richness of the quantum behaviour occurring inside a single molecule. This is a fantastic challenge for chemists, physicist and for the entire technology.

Two interests for the Nanoscience CEMES group in pursuing the grand challenge of mono-molecular electronics:

  • fundamental for the pleasure we will have to understand and control the quantum intramolecular behaviours of a single super-molecule

  • practical for the necessity to develop a picotechnology in mastering multiple interconnections and nano-communication tools with a single molecule.

  • Our mono-molecular electronic project is supported by the European Commission under the IST FET projects "Bottom-Up Nanomachines" (BUN) and "Consortium for Hamiltonian Information Computing" (CHIC), both coordinated by the Nanoscience CEMES group.
