STM in the spotlight!

Fundamental mechanisms at the origin of the luminescence of semiconducting monolayers have been studied with scanning tunneling microscope-induced light emission technique with unprecedented spatial and spectral resolutions. The luminescence intensity has been enhanced by an order of magnitude by using nanostructured plasmonic substrates.

Controlled functionalization of graphene

Graphene on Cu (111) or on mica can be functionalized in a controlled manner by photo-cycloaddition reactions between a 2D supramolecular layer of a maleimide dienophile and graphene. This reaction disrupts the delocalization of the electrons of graphene by opening a gap of 170 meV in the irradiated zones.

Core-shell nanoparticles with evolving forms

Core-shell iron-golf nanoparticles synthesized by UHV growth show an astonishing evolution of their morphology as the amount of gold increases, changing from a polyhedral shape to an iron cube coated by truncated gold pyramids. The origin of this evolution has been elucidated.
