Although art-and-science activities are becoming more and more widespread, they are still disdained by part of the scientific community. This is particularly true in material science. This misunderstanding is based on a lack of awareness of the impact that this practice can have not only on the research activities but also on the dissemination of ideas. Besides, art-and-science represents a critical space that allows us to question the societal impact of science and technology as well as a way to interact with civil society other than through technical language.
Indeed, throughout human history, these two practices have always spoken to each other, reaching their peak during the Renaissance. The rise of modern philosophy (Descartes, Pascal...) separated for a time the paths of these two disciplines, which began to dialogue again at the beginning of the 20th century.
In this pedagogical seminar, after a historical introduction, I will explain how the so-called "artistic" and "scientific" activities are actually related. I will then introduce the arts&sciences chair (École polytechnique, École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD), PSL and the Daniel et Nina Carasso Foundation).
This can be seen as a space of invention, which probes the richness and complexity of the relations between the two disciplines and whose mission is to explore new forms of creation and communication. I will then position this in the broader context of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris.
To conclude, I will describe my activities and commitments within the framework of the chair.
