Ropes, crampons, ice axes… and now ultra-high-resolution satellite imagery. Glaciologists deploy a wide array of tools to study these ailing glaciers, over which they hover. Often nestled in the heart of remote regions, glaciers bear the brunt of climate change.

This lecture will take us on a journey through the world’s major glacial regions to understand the impact of human activities on the health of the planet’s glaciers and the consequences for ecosystems and our societies. In particular, we will see how observations from space now enable comprehensive and regular monitoring of the more than 200,000 glaciers on Earth.
